Health insurance for children: costs, excess and deductible
To be sufficiently covered in the event of illness, it is important to choose the right health insurance for your child or children. But which deductible and which basic health insurance model are best for you? And which supplementary insurance is worthwhile? We help untangle all the options.
Basic health insurance for your child
Basic health insurance is compulsory for everyone in Switzerland, including children.
It always provides the same benefits regardless of health insurer.
Early registration:
If you’re expecting a baby, we recommend registering them for health insurance before they are even born. This allows you to focus on your newborn and family life during your first few weeks as parents rather than having to deal with administrative tasks. What’s more, your child will be safely covered from day one. You can simply submit their date of birth at a later point in time.
Guaranteed insurance cover:
Health insurers in Switzerland are obliged to accept your baby – even if it is born with medical issues.

Which health insurance model should I choose for my child?
The benefits covered by the various models are identical but discounted premiums may be available depending on the model. Many health insurers offer a free choice of paediatric doctor with all models. You should ideally check the conditions of the individual models offered by your health insurer to find the model that best suits your needs and personal circumstances. Here at KPT, we generally recommend the two models KPTwin.doc and KPTwin.win for children.
