What should you do if you fall ill?
If you have the standard free choice of doctor model and are ill, always proceed as follows:
1. Check your symptoms
Visit a doctor of your choice or use the symptom checker in the . Alternatively, you can consult a doctor using via WhatsApp. The telemedical advice service is also available over the phone 24/7.
2. Select your treatment steps
Choose the appropriate treatment steps depending on the situation.
- Consult your doctor.
- Visit a specialist.
- Go to a hospital emergency department.
You can only go to hospital directly in the event of an emergency. In all other cases, you need a doctor’s referral.
3. Order medication
You can order medication online – for example, from the online pharmacy – or in a local pharmacy.
4. Check your treatment plan
Discuss your treatment plan with your general practitioner or a medical specialist.
What basic health insurance covers
The benefits available with basic health insurance are the same throughout Switzerland and from all health insurers. The insurance covers medically necessary treatments for illness, accident and maternity.
