Which supplementary dental insurance is useful for kids?
Healthy milk teeth lay the foundation for strong permanent teeth, reducing the risk of dental disease and associated dental costs in later life. But even with the best dental care, half of all children need braces, the costs of which can soon rise to above 10,000 francs. That’s why many parents take out supplementary dental insurance for their children. But which dental insurance should you choose and how much can you expect to pay?
What does dental insurance for kids in Switzerland cover?
In Switzerland, dental treatment is not covered under compulsory health insurance for adults or children. It is only covered in the case of a serious, unavoidable temporomandibular disorder (a condition affecting the movement of the jaw). Supplementary dental insurance covers the costs of dental treatments that are not covered under basic health insurance, invalidity insurance or accident insurance. It covers the following:
- Dental treatment
- Corrective orthodontics and orthodontic treatments such as braces
- Check-ups
- Dental hygiene (teeth cleaning)
- Fillings and dentures
- Surgical procedures, such as wisdom teeth removal
The amount covered under supplementary dental insurance can vary depending on the benefit class selected.
Who pays for kids’ braces?
- In Switzerland, corrective orthodontics such as braces are usually not covered under compulsory health insurance. The costs are only covered for children with a serious, unavoidable temporomandibular disorder (a condition affecting the movement of the jaw).
