Prenatal registration in a nutshell
In Switzerland, all babies must be registered for basic health insurance. With prenatal registration, your newborn is covered from day one.
Compulsory:
everyone in Switzerland is required to take out basic health insurance.
Covered from day one:
with prenatal registration, your baby is covered right from birth.
Even in an emergency:
cover is also provided for premature birth or illness.
No health check:
supplementary health insurance is easier to take out prior to birth.
Free supplementary dental insurance:
dental insurance with benefit class 4 is free of charge for children under one. This is useful if your child needs braces when older.
Basic health insurance offers foundation level cover. Additionally taking out supplementary health insurance for babies and children provides more comprehensive protection for your newborn; for dental treatment or glasses, for example.
Financial security for your baby
We recommend registering your baby for supplementary health insurance before birth as no health check will be required. Supplementary dental insurance is also recommended as it covers future braces, for example.
