Changing your health insurer: deadlines and procedure
In Switzerland, you can give notice of your intention to cancel your basic health insurance up to 30 November and switch as of 1 January. Please note that you must not have any unpaid bills with your health insurer on 31 December. Other deadlines apply to supplementary health insurance. Read on to find out how to change health insurer and how to save when doing so.
Changing basic health insurance in Switzerland: deadlines
In Switzerland, the notice period for cancellation of basic health insurance is one month. Your cancellation notice must be received by your current health insurer during its published opening hours by 30 November at the latest. If 30 November falls on a weekend, the cancellation notice must be received by the health insurer on the final working day in November. You can switch to a new health insurer as of 1 January.
All health insurers are obliged to accept you for basic health insurance irrespective of your age and your health.
Top tip: send your notice of cancellation by registered post so you have evidence of its receipt.
