How to prevent diabetes: 6 practical tips
Preventing diabetes is important for staying healthy in old age. People at increased risk can significantly reduce their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes through a healthy diet, regular physical activity and moderate weight loss, Some supplementary outpatient insurance plans support this through contributions towards physical activity or check-ups.
What is diabetes and why is prevention important?
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body cannot properly produce or use the hormone insulin. This causes blood sugar levels to become permanently elevated, which can lead to long-term damage to the body.
There are several forms of diabetes. The most common are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
- Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease for which no preventive measures are currently available. The body does not produce insulin, meaning that carbohydrates consumed through food cannot be processed properly. As a result, people with type 1 diabetes must inject insulin several times a day throughout their lives to prevent complications. Type 1 diabetes most commonly develops in children, adolescents and young adults.
- Type 2 diabetes, which more commonly affects older adults, is associated with a range of factors, including lifestyle factors such as diet or physical activity. However, genetic predisposition and other medical factors also play an important role in determining risk. The condition becomes increasingly common from around the age of 60 and is by far the most prevalent form of diabetes. Although type 2 diabetes cannot always be prevented, adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk. Diabetes can lead to various health complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, vision problems and nerve damage.
