Sport, fitness and gym: what health insurance covers
A fitness membership is great for health and well-being – but is it covered under health insurance? Many health insurers contribute towards gym memberships and sports activities through supplementary health insurance. Pulse supplementary health insurance from KPT contributes up to 300 francs per year towards gym memberships and up to 600 francs in total towards sport and exercise.
Are gym memberships covered under basic health insurance?
No, gym memberships are not covered under basic health insurance in Switzerland. The benefits available under compulsory health insurance are regulated by the Health Insurance Act (HIA) and cover only medically necessary treatments.
As sport and fitness are for preventive healthcare, they are not covered under basic health insurance, which is where supplementary insurance steps in to help you take a proactive approach to your health.
Around three-quarters of the Swiss population follow the FOPH physical activity guidelines, but more than a quarter do no sport whatsoever (source: Federal Statistical Office). Supplementary health insurance can help you follow a more active lifestyle.
