If you do not have accident insurance through an employer or work fewer than 8 hours a week, you must include accident insurance in your basic health insurance. You can do this here or in the KPTnet customer portal. This also covers you for accidents that happen outside of work.

What statutory accident insurance covers
Statutory in Switzerland covers the main costs following an accident. Everybody in Switzerland is legally required to have accident insurance.
Statutory accident insurance’ is generally understood to mean accident insurance under the Accident Insurance Act (AIA). However, there are two options: you are either insured by your employer under the Accident Insurance Act (AIA) or you arrange accident insurance with your health insurer as part of your basic health insurance under the Health Insurance Act (HIA). Both types of accident insurance are statutory. Accident insurance is compulsory in Switzerland.
Following an accident, accident insurance covers the costs of doctors, hospitals, medication, therapy and medical aids. If you are temporarily unable to care for yourself, it also covers the cost of care and domestic assistance in your home. With accident insurance under the AIA, you do not have to pay a or . This differs from accident insurance under the HIA, where deductible and excess payments are required.
